The EGF rules commission is aware of the problem and we want to
address it. In fact, all the EGF's tournament rulesets shall be
rewritten during the following year.

Reader´s opinion. Peter Zandveld about the EGC-2006

Dear Alexandre,

I read your personal impressions of the go congress with interest. I
will also share mine:

1. I think the congress was quite OK for most participants. The
playing rooms had good working air conditioning, the rounds started in
time most of the days etc. The invitation of Takemiya and Hotta Yumi
was appreciated by many, judging by the crowds attending. Also the
japanese professionals Saijo and Hayashi were never too tired to teach
or entertain. If there was lot of people not having a good time, they
were very good in hiding it.

2.Unfortunately the congress was apparently not OK for many
non-participants. I have heard many reasons for people not
attending.

My guess is the most important reason is cost, or expected cost, and
the availability of alternatives. This summer you could make a go
holiday in at least: Lithuania, Poland, France, Czechia and even the
Netherlands. This year's congress was offering a good deal for the
middle class west-europeans and japanese, but offered no good deals
for students, families with children and players from outside the
euro-zone.

3. The choice to produce heavy metal (not wood) diploma's would not be
my choice, but is no surprise. At the time Italy was given the 50th
congress (at the EGF meeting in 1999, Podbanske) it was known there
would be no money prizes. At least 75% of delegates, including the
Russian, voted in favour of Italy.

4. The European Champion hardly played other Europeans. This is for a
large part due to fact many strong Europeans were not there. In case
in the future a nice sponsor is found the organizers should consider
using to money for inviting top Europeans, instead of for prizes.
